EG Cleveland has a long history of re-using and recycling a variety of materials. With input on sustainability efforts from other plants and locations within the company, the various lessons learned came together in one Sustainability Program for the Cleveland facility.
Last October 2017, managers from plants and facilities across the company came together for a Sustainability Conference in Columbus, Ohio. During the conference, presentations were made by several guests and speakers. One such speaker was a representative from Frito-Lay who showed attendees a comprehensive and exciting program being undertaking at their company. This presentation put a spark on the Cleveland team and challenged the team to put together a formal Sustainability Program that advances the EGI corporate keystone of “Acting as Respectful Corporate Citizens.”
The team used a Recycling Checklist provided by the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District as their guide, and then developed a plan to re-use, refurbish, or recycle every item on the county’s list. As the project progressed, the team welcomed input from other members of the EGI Continuous Improvement Team as well who made several recommendations including how to recycle electronic waste.
At the end of the project, EG Cleveland successfully addressed every item on the county’s list. The project also resulted in one of the plant’s customers awarding the Cleveland facility a perfect score for sustainability on their latest Customer Scorecard! With these quick wins, EG Cleveland is looking forward for opportunities to compete for various recycling and sustainability awards nationwide.
